What an amazing day we had this past Saturday during our open house to celebrate the 10e Biennale du Patrimoine Horloger in La Chaux-de-Fonds!
We had guests from as far away as Mexico, as well as some from right next door. It was great to meet our old friends, and to make some new ones.
The watch business can be hard. And we realize that it is, indeed, a business. But it is these opportunities to meet with you that make it the special business that it is.
Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm, passion and sense of joy with us. It is a day we will not soon forget!

Happy Birthday to Us!
We are getting ready to light 15 candles on our birthday cake in a very special city, one that Karl Marx described in his “Capital” (1867) as unique: as a city that has become a single huge watch manufactory. Famous for its chessboard-like city plan, which since the 19th century has tried to compete with the most modern American cities of its time, a Swiss watch manufacturing town, the now famous moniker “Made in Switzerland” came to life here. This interconnectedness lives on today, in small ateliers and medium-sized factories. It cultivates and advances the pioneering work of this city in developing and producing unique watches.
These past 15 years have seen ochs und junior grow from a boutique-based experiment with Embassy Jewelers in Lucerne into one of the most recognizable small independent brands in the world. From 2 models to an impressive collection of time machines ranging from basic time and date, to annual calendars, ochs und junior has grown in much the same way as the city it now calls home.
Our 15th anniversary has already seen three new collections released –The cca, the settimana limited, and the moon phase trilogy. And we’re not done yet! We have something exciting coming, stay tuned!

On Saturday November 6, the ateliers and watch factories of La Chaux-de-Fonds will open their doors in celebration of “10e Biennale du patrimoine horloger”! Keep an eye on your email in-box! We will be sending you information about this event in our September newsletter. And one more thing: on Sunday November 7 at the MIH, watch dealers, antiquarians and collectors will offer their watches for sale in one of the largest open markets in the world.
And La Chaux-de-Fonds is not only famous for watchmakers! This proud watch metropolis was also home to Léopold Robert, Le Corbusier, Blaise Cendrars, and Louis-Joseph Chevrolet.

The Chinese New Year, which begins today, February 12, 2021, is the Year of the Metal Buffalo, the Ox, according to the Chinese horoscope. In a happy synchronicity, we are excited to celebrate 15 years of ox and junior during this ox year. We will surprise you with news large and small which we will communicate regularly through our homepage, blog, Instagram and newsletter. And like the ox, whose character traits include patience, perseverance and commitment, our team of complementary personalities is hard-working, dedicated, and creative. We are highly motivated to make this an innovative and creative ox anniversary year, together with you.
Through our watches, we would like to further address the needs of our customers in the Asian cultural area, whose Chinese New Year is aligned with the moon, or in other words: with our moon phase watch. What better time than in the Year of the Ox to send a special greeting to this far away continent?

settimana limited
Heralding the arrival of the juniors in the family company, this original watch is young and rare, reborn in La Chaux-de-Fonds, our new company headquarters. In a limited run, only eleven watches will be available in each of the three color combinations. And of course, the new settimana is available for preorder. The watches will be delivered at the end of March 2021.
the calendario cent’anni
ochs und junior’s new “hundred-year perpetual calendar-cca” is based on Ludwig Oechslin’s ingenious simplification of telling time. The cca will accurately display, without the need for constant correction, the number of days in a month for 100 years via the signatory ochs und junior date spiral, and the month and leap years through an array of traveling dots, all purely mechanical. The cca is available in a white, black and anthrazit dial with either Arabic character or indices. This unique watch is available for preorder. The watches will be delivered at the end of March 2021.

Marc Bernhardt, director of ochs und junior since the beginning of the year has resigned from his post, effective November 30, 2020, to pursue other professional challenges. Marc was instrumental in facilitating the transition and move from Lucerne to La Chaux-de-Fonds. The Board would like to sincerely thank him for his work and dedication during this important period and wishes him all the best in his future career and professional activities.
We would also like to announce that we are pleased to welcome two new people to our ochs und junior team: Christian Gafner – Head of Brand and Design and Master watchmaker Masaki Kanazawa, who works for us on a part-time basis on Ludwig Oechslin’s special ochs und junior projects.
We wish all of our new colleagues a successful start and look forward to our collaboration.

First glimpses of La Chaux-de-Fonds
Dear friends and clients of ochs und junior. We are now well-settled in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the historic former center of the Swiss watchmaking industry, where we are working on new, upcoming launches. In several stages over the next few months, we would like to begin discovering this extraordinary town in French speaking Switzerland. La Chaux-de-Fonds has been a Unesco World heritage site since 2009 and was described as a “huge factory-town” by Karl Marx in his famous “Das Kapital” (1867).
As a sort of attunement, we begin this imaginary trip with a photo series on our blog, shot by a young, promising talent, Philipp Bernhardt, a Swiss-born photographer based in Toronto.
Visit our blog for your first photographic glimpses of this town and bid farewell with us to the friendly season before the beginning of what in La Chaux-de-Fonds can be a grueling winter.

After managing the affairs of ochs und junior for the last three months, we are pleased to announce that Marc Bernhardt has permanently joined ochs und junior as new managing director. His appointment coincides with our imminent move to the new premises in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

As previously announced ochs und junior is moving from Lucerne to La Chaux-de-Fonds. The workshop at Zürichstrasse 49 in Lucerne will be permanently closed as of March 20, 2020. The change of address, including new phone numbers, will be posted shortly on our homepage. Please contact us per email for any urgent matters. Our new workshop will be up and running by March 31 for all services including general queries, placing orders and after sales service. Thank you for taking note and we look forward to welcoming you at our new location.

ochs und junior is moving to a new home
We are happy to announce that this coming April we will be opening a new ochs und junior workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, in the Jura mountains. We will be located in the historic district of this ancient center of the Swiss watchmaking industry, since 2009 a UNESCO World Heritage site. The collaboration with our partners in the German-speaking part of Switzerland will continue, and our new manufacturing, purchase, and service offers remain continuously guaranteed. Images and background story will be provided in a later post.
We are looking forward to welcoming you soon to this historic and unique town at the center of the Swiss watchmaking industry!

ochs und junior is happy to announce that Jost Schlatter will be joining us on January 2 as the new watchmaker. He will be replacing Kevin Hoffmann who is leaving end of January 2020. We greatly appreciated having Kevin on the team and wish him well for his new endeavors. At the same time, we are excited to welcome Jost to the team. Jost is a certified watchmaker (4 years) and technician ES specialized in the restoration of complicated timepieces.

Beat Weinmann, ochs und junior’s longtime CEO, has decided to leave the company. The Board of Directors would like to thank him for his strong contribution over the years and wish him much success in his new endeavors. Along with Kurt König and Ludwig Oechslin, Beat co-founded ochs und junior in 2006. He has been instrumental in elevating this company to where it is today. His dedication, commitment and expertise will be missed. Beat’s successor and the company’s new organization and products will be announced shortly. In the interim, Marc Bernhardt (oj@ochsundjunior.swiss) will act as a consultant for the company in order to ensure the continuity of operations and services. We would like to thank all of our customers, partners, and friends for their ongoing support.

The fall and resurgence of the Swiss watch industry: Hansjürg Zumstein has produced a new film about how the Swiss watch industry was saved following the Quartz Crisis. The film was broadcast on Swiss television (SRF) on Thursday evening and is well-worth watching. The documentary’s premier was on Monday, 4. March in Grenchen in front of a full auditorium. Afterwards, Dr. Hanspeter Rentsch (former chief lawyer of the Swatch Group), Beat Gilomen (movement maker for the Swatch Group), author Bettina Hahnloser and ochs und junior CEO Beat Weinmann discussed these critical times and what emerged from them. Yesterday “The Watch, Thoroughly Revised” was published. This is the second edition of “The Watch”, a book widely considered to be the top English survey of men’s wristwatches – and a book which Cail purchased, many years ago, before he moved to Switzerland to join ochs und junior. 50 watch brands, including Rolex, Patek Philippe and all of the other leading watch companies, have profiles. And so does ochs und junior, on account of the innovations of Ludwig Oechslin. The moon phase, date, annual calendar LIGHT, and perpetual calendar are all featured, and there is also a profile of Oechslin. Our copy is on its way, and we’re looking forward to it!

The Swiss Federal Office of Communications (BAKOM) made a press release on April 10th which mentions ochs und junior as the first Swiss watch company to have a .swiss TLD. BAKOM refers to ochs und junior as the “innovative Lucerne watch maker with an international customer base”. Last night we moved our website from an Amazon Web Services “C4.large Instance” to a new “C5.large Instance”. There was no downtime. C5 Instances are the latest EC2 instance type from AWS. They are powered by 3.0 GHz Intel Xeon Scalable processors which offer up to 50% higher performance on certain applications. The performance improvement can be felt across our entire website, but especially on the customizer and the “Print 1:1” features.

Last night on YouTube, we came across a song called ochs und junior by ŁJK. Google Translate helped us with the song’s description: “It’s all a matter of time, so you have to measure it precisely. But not just anything.” Wszystko kwestią czasu, więc trzeba go zmierzyć dokładnie. Ale nie byle czym. We think we recognized “ochs und junior” around the 02:10 mark, and also possibly Patek Philippe, Zenith and Moser. In any case, we’re honored ŁJK chose ochs und junior for the title. If one of our Polish-speaking visitors could help us understand a little more, we’re curious!

Earlier this month, a group of German business managers made a grand tour of Swiss watch companies. Their goal was to understand how Swiss watches are made today and to exchange ideas about business and entrepreneurship with the CEOs. Their trip led them to the Vallée de Joux, Geneva, Biel, and Schaffhausen, where they met with the CEOs of IWC, Audemars Piquet, Chopard, and MB&F. It also brought them to Lucerne for a watch company quite a bit smaller by any business measure.
